APPAM's annual fall research conference has become a preeminent venue for the presentation and discussion of applied public policy research, attracting at least 1000 participants for 150+ sessions across three days of meetings in late October-early November each year. Since 1985 the conference has been held in Washington, DC in the odd numbered years and in other major U.S. cities in the even numbered years. The cities for conferences outside of DC are selected from competitive bids submitted by APPAM-member institutions that wish to serve as the local hosts. Locations for APPAM Fall Conferences, 1979 - 2011
To see a map of the Fall Conferences' locations, please click here. Beginning in 1994 the APPAM president-elect has chosen a theme for the fall conference that influences the panel and paper proposals selected for inclusion in the meetings. Approximately 25% of all proposals submitted to the conference reflect that year's theme, and there is a preference for including material related to the theme in the conference program. The following table lists the year, location, dates, and theme of each conference, and also has a link to a searchable PDF version of each conference program. Beginning with the 1998 Fall Conference, APPAM also offers a searchable database of information about papers delivered at each meeting that may be accessed under the CONFERENCES menu item "Fall Conference Archives" or by clicking here. Please note that APPAM does not archive the actual conference papers, and the resources on this website help users identify the author to contact regarding access to a paper. APPAM Fall Research Conferences, 1979 - 2008
Every year the president-elect appoints a conference program committee of approximately 25 persons to select proposals among those submitted for the conference. The program committee members span a wide variety of substantive areas, and an equally wide variety of areas are supported within the conference. As depicted in the figure on this page, over time a large number of topical areas have thrived within the conference, and the total number of sessions at the conference has increased considerably. APPAM has always included practitioners within the conference, and many non-academic researchers consider APPAM to be their primary professional meeting. The fall research conference also developed many special events and features, including receptions, a Job Bank service, plenaries, book exhibits, poster sessions, the Annual Membership Meeting, and tours. An APPAM conference is an intense experience, with many opportunities for professional networking, exposure to the latest research in the field, and even some sightseeing. As APPAM enters the 21st century, the Association will continue to enhance the vitality of the fall research conference as one of its most important activities. APPAM especially is seeking increased conference participation from among policymakers at all levels of government and other practitioners who are directly involved in the areas of emphasis within the annual research conference.
